Update from Adam Crapser’s Hearing on December 10th
PORTLAND, OREGON — Community supporters from Oregon, Illinois, and Virginia came to support Adam Crapser, a Korean American adoptee who was placed in deportation proceedings at the beginning of 2015, at his immigration hearing on December 10th. The immigration judge set Adam’s next master calendar hearing date for July 12, 2016 at 8:30 a.m.
Members of the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO), Korean American Coalition (KAC) of Oregon, National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC), and other community supporters continue to ask for community members nationwide to sign a petition in support of Adam being removed from deportation proceedings and to donate to the Adoptee Defense Fund to support Adam’s immigration legal fees and counseling resources.
While providing direct support for Adam, community supporters also continue to advocate for the passage of the Adoptee Citizenship Act (S.2275), a piece of bipartisan legislation that will grant retroactive U.S. citizenship to international adoptees regardless of when they were adopted and create a clear pathway for adoptees who have been deported for minor crimes and allow them to return to the United States.
Adam Crapser said: “I thank everyone who has been supporting me throughout this process. This has and continues to be a long journey, but this fight is not only about me. This fight is about winning the right to live in this country without fear of being deported for all of the estimated 18,000 Korean adoptees as well as other adopted individuals without U.S. citizenship. As the journey continues I hope that more and more people in the adoptee community and our allies can come together for this important cause.”
