Voting Rights Act Lawsuit Filed

By March 29, 2006No Comments

On February 6, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) on behalf of YKASEC and other organizations filed a lawsuit against New York City Board of Elections for violations of the language assistance provisions of the federal Voting Rights Act. The lawsuit states that voters have encountered a range of discriminatory obstacles in exercising their right to vote. Over the years, numerous complaints were filed to the NYC Board of Election but due to the lack of significant improvement, AALDEF and YKASEC have moved forward with legal actions. The lawsuit was also filed on behalf of the Korean American Voters’ Council, the Chinatown Voter Education Alliance, the Chinese American Voters Association, and five limited-English-proficient Asian American voters.
