California Dream Act Has Its Day

Yesterday, a group of students and advocates from Los Angeles traveled to Sacramento to support the California Dream Act! After a press conference with Assemblymember Gil Cedillo, students participated in the assembly’s Higher Education Committee hearing, where the bill passed 6-2.

NAKASEC was among the students and leaders who made the trip yesterday. Olivia Park had this to say:

Students from all backgrounds and ages were there, a truly diverse mix of leaders and leaders in the making. It was great to see younger students and siblings of seasoned Dream Act organizers share their story for the first time. There were definitely feelings of hope and power in this renewed struggle for access to higher education for undocumented immigrant students. It was noted during the gathering and good to be reminded of what we are really made of – California, in the past, set positive examples for other states to follow. We are ready to do that again starting with the California Dream act.

Remember what New Organizing Project blogger Ju Hong had to say when the California Dream Act was introduced earlier this year? Well, it’s gotten a great start to becoming just that reality he was calling for.

Lots of more inspiring leadership to follow! Stay tuned!
