NAKASEC’s March 16 Remembrance Statement

This March 16, 2022 marks one-year since the brutal murders of eight people in Atlanta, six of whom were Asian women. As we remember and honor the victims, we center and support the care and healing of their families and loved ones. We are grateful for local community organizations in Georgia, who have provided direct aid and demanded the funding of support programs for restorative justice, public health, and community wellness. We are resolved in our commitment to achieving safety and dignity for all.

We reject calls for increased surveillance, policing, incarceration, and other punitive measures, as these practices have never provided our communities safety, particularly not for our undocumented community members. The events of last March and the documented rise in violence against East Asians and those perceived as East Asian since 2020 are part of a larger legacy of violence against Asian communities in the United States. We assert that these experiences of harm are a direct result of the white supremacy, xenophobia, imperialism, sexism, and misogyny endemic to our country’s systems and structures. To address these issues, there must be a diametric shift in policy and society that leans into a future of restorative and transformative justice and community care.

All immigrants, including Asian Americans, continue to endure heightened fear and trauma as these systems persist and manifest in everyday life – from microaggressions to ICE raids, detention and deportations, increased surveillance and policing, and separation from families. Undocumented community members, in particular, face innumerable barriers to safety and are denied access to basic rights, protections, resources, and solutions. This unjust gatekeeping deepens the potential for migrant community members to experience harm, violence, and trauma without recourse.

One year later, as we hold space for those in Atlanta and beyond, we reaffirm our commitment to those most-impacted and to a future where every person in every community lives and thrives with full safety, support, and dignity.

In community,
The NAKASEC Network
