NAKASEC On the Mass Shooting in Half Moon Bay, CA
NATIONWIDE – The NAKASEC Network responds to the massacre in Half Moon Bay, CA.
“Our hearts are broken,” said Becky Belcore, co-director with the National Korean American and Education Consortium (NAKASEC). “Only a day after the Monterey Park massacre, a gunman took the lives of 7 people and forever altered the lives of their families and countless others. Our thoughts are with the families of those killed and those who were injured. As an Asian American network, we are grieving with our community over the recent devastating violence.”
These events point to a growing societal crisis in the United States. Only 24 days into 2023, the U.S. has already experienced 39 mass shootings that took the lives of 69 people; more than one shooting per day. To effectively prevent the gun violence that has become ubiquitous in the U.S., we must acknowledge these continuous acts are the direct result of corporate greed of the gun industry, systemic racism and patriarchy, and our lawmakers being complicit by not taking action.
Our elders, parents, children, friends, students, and loved ones deserve to study, work, travel, worship – and just live – without fear. Access to culturally and linguistically competent healthcare including mental health services, quality food and housing, and community support are critical to creating a safe society. We must destigmatize mental health support, and work together for a world that embraces us all. For this to become a reality, people in power must prioritize meeting the shared and unique needs of diverse communities across the country, including Asian Americans and immigrants, over profit and personal interests.

미전역 – 캘리포니아주 해프문 베이에서 일어난 총기난사 사건에 대한 미교협 성명서
“가슴이 너무 아프다”고 베키 벨코어 미주한인봉사교육단체협의회 (미교협) 공동사무총장은 말하면서 “만터레이 팍 대량 학살사건이 일어난지 불과 하루만에 7명의 생명을 앗아가는 또 다른 총기사건이 발생했고, 그들의 가정과 많은 사람들의 삶을 영구히 바꿔버렸다. 희생자 가족들에게 조의를 표하고, 중상자들의 조속한 회복을 기원한다. 아시안 아메리칸 조직으로서 총기폭력을 겪은 우리 지역사회와 함께 슬퍼한다”고 했습니다.
이러한 일련의 사건들은 미국의 점점 긴급해지는 사회적 위기를 나타내고 있습니다. 2023년 들어 24일동안 미국에서 벌써 39건의 총기난사 사건이 발생했고 69명의 목숨을 앗아갔습니다. 이는 하루에 한건이 훨씬 넘습니다. 미국 도처에서 일어나고 있는 총기폭력을 효과적으로 막기 위해서 우리는 이런 계속되는 폭력이 총기산업, 제도적 인종차별, 부권사회의 직접적 결과이며 연방의원들이 아무 행동도 하지 않으므로써 공모하고 있기 때문임을 인정해야 합니다.
우리의 연장자, 부모, 어린이, 친구, 학생, 사랑하는 이들이 아무 공포없이 공부하고 직장에 다니고 신앙생활을 하고 또한 생활할 수 있어야 합니다. 안전한 사회를 만들기 위해 문화적으로 언어적으로 적합한 정신건강 치료를 포함한 의료혜택, 식품영양 혜택과 주택복지를 제공해야 하고, 지역사회의 상부상조가 필요합니다. 정신건강 도움을 받는 것이 수치스러운 일이 아님을 교육해야 하고 모든 사람이 받아들여지는 사회를 이루기 위해 함께 노력해야 합니다. 이런 목적을 현실화하기 위해서 권력자들은 이윤과 개인의 이익을 추구하기보다는 동양계 미국인, 이민자들을 포함한 여러 다양한 지역사회들의 공동의 또한 독특한 필요를 파악하여 충족시켜야 합니다.
