NAKASEC Applauds Rep. Jeff Denham:
Who will be next to co-sponsors of H.R. 15?
Annandale, VA—Yesterday, US Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA) officially announced his support as a co-sponsor of H.R. 15, The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. The bill was introduced a few weeks ago by Democrats in the House of Representatives. Congressman Denham is the first House Republican to join the 185 Democratic co-sponsors of the bill, which closely mirrors the bipartisan Senate legislation without the final border militarization provision that was added.
“We thank Congressmember Denham for exercising leadership in the House by standing up to move comprehensive immigration reform forward,” said Sik Son, executive director of the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center in Chicago.
“We have the votes in the House to pass immigration reform this year. What we need is for Rep. Ed Royce and other members of the California delegation to put politics aside and listen to their constituents,” added Hee Joo Yoon, executive director of the Korean Resource Center in Los Angeles.
Immigration reform could be the comeback issue for the Republicans after suffering poor approval ratings for how they handled the government shutdown and budget and debt ceiling debacle. This is the time for House Republicans to prove that their talk about immigration reform is real —and that means action on true bipartisan legislation with a path to citizenship for the over 11 million aspiring Americans.
“We will continue to work with House members, Democrats and Republicans, with a significant Asian American constituency, to urge GOP members to support H.R. 15 and increase the pressure on Speaker Boehner bring a bipartisan bill to the floor,” said Dae Joong Yoon, executive director of NAKASEC (National Korean American Service & Education Consortium). “The time to act is now. Let’s stand with immigrant families. The movement is not going away and the Asian American voice will continue to get louder. ”
