“We Are America, America Is Home” Photo Contest Launches Nationwide
What Does Family Mean To You? In Midst of Critical Immigration Reform Discussions, Effort Aims to Put Families First
Washington D.C. – The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) and its affiliates the Korean American Resource & Cultural Center (KRCC) in Chicago and the Korean Resource Center (KRC) in Los Angeles are excited to launch the nationwide “We Are America, America is Home” photo contest. The effort comes at a critical time when policymakers and the public are talking about how to fix the broken immigration system. However, latest discussions are leaving some American families out of the conversation altogether.
“Some members of Congress think that jeopardizing certain members of our community in the name of economic prosperity is ok. We’re here to tell them it’s not. The latest out of Washington is really what is propelling this photo campaign into high gear,” said Dong Yoon Kim, program associate with NAKASEC.
Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported that certain members of Congress were considering reducing the family visa program as part of the immigration deal. This has angered many in the immigrant community, including Korean Americans and Asian Americans.
“During this important time for comprehensive immigration reform, we want to remind Congress and President Obama what this is all about. It’s about families,” said HeyKyung Eum, community organizer with KRCC.
Adds Kevin Hyunkyu Lee, immigrant rights project coordinator at KRC, “You can say that we’re putting the heart and family back into the debate. We’re excited that we’re engaging our community to be the ones to lead and shape the narrative.”
The “’We Are America, America Is Home” Photo Contest will run from March 28 to April 30 and winners will be announced early May. For more information on the contest and how to participate, please visit http://weareamericaishome.tumblr.com/ .
