Youth will Campaign Door-to-Door to Speak with Korean American Voters about Protecting the Maryland Dream Act
8 youth from across the state actively campaign in Washington, D.C.
On Saturday August 4 from 1:00pm – 4:30pm, youth will be spending the day visiting Korean American voters in Silver Springs, Rockville, Clarksville, and University Gardens in Maryland to register new voters and educate community about the Maryland Dream Act.
Youth will be encouraging Korean American voters to vote to protect the Maryland Dream Act in the November 6 elections. Furthermore, at 11:30am, NAKASEC will hold a press briefing at Hampton Inn, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, for reporters interested in learning more about the Maryland Dream Act or following the students as they walk around.
In April 2011, the Maryland Senate approved the Maryland DREAM Act, a bill that would grant students who have lived in Maryland, graduated from a Maryland high school, and whose family paid taxes in the state the option to pay in-state tuition at public colleges regardless of immigration status. However, the law has been put to a referendum subject to a statewide vote on November 6, 2012. Approximately 300,000 Asian Americans live in Maryland and nationally, 1 in 10 undocumented youth are AAPI.
