Our Families are NOT Negotiable!

Washington D.C. — To highlight the concerning issue of Congress cutting family reunification in their negotiations of a permanent solution for undocumented immigrants, the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) and affiliates, the HANA Center of greater Chicago and the Korean Resource Center (KRC) of Los Angeles and Orange County, held a visual demonstration within the Russell Rotunda. Other immigrant rights groups present in solidarity included Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, CASA, the Franciscan Action Network, Church World Service (CWS), and the Disciples of Christ. A livestream of the action can be watched here. The demonstration consisted of our community members displaying enlarged portraits of their loved ones to symbolize the human faces, lives, and families of those who will suffer should family reunification be negotiated away. Additionally, a banner was held that stated “No Family Ban” on one side and “Full Citizenship 4 All” on the other.

Angie Kim, Community Engagement & Advocacy Coordinator with NAKASEC, stated:

“Our action is a manifestation of our unity and dedication to the undocumented youth of this country, our families, and our diverse immigrant communities. Through this demonstration, we are displaying the power of love and families and uplifting the strength of our parents who had the courage to journey across continents and borders to provide a healthier, safer, and brighter future for their children. The young undocumented immigrants of this country deserve a common sense, comprehensive permanent solution that will protect our livelihood, our dreams, and our families. We refuse to bargain our dreams and futures while our families are in danger by the current administration’s anti-immigrant agenda.”
