Statement From the National Korean American Service and Education Consortium’s (NAKASEC) as SCOTUS Hears Oral Arguments on Affirmative Action
Washington, D.C. – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is hearing oral arguments in the Students For Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard and SFFA v. UNC at Chapel Hill cases. The rulings, expected sometime in 2023, will likely impact the future of Affirmative Action and race-conscious admissions policies.
The National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC) released the following statement:
As an organization who organizes Korean and Asian Americans and immigrants, we fundamentally reject the flawed idea that race-conscious admissions harms our communities. Furthermore, we affirm the right for every person, regardless of race, gender, dis/ability, and citizenship status, to pursue their dreams – including but not limited to, higher education.
It’s important to understand that the United States was built upon and within the notion of racial, cultural, and economic hierarchy – more specifically, anti-Blackness and the the delusion of white body supremacy. These beliefs and ideas are embedded into the structures, systems, and institutions of the United States, including higher education. From severely underfunded public schools in Black and brown neighborhoods, to the carceral state and cradle-to-prison pipeline, poor and non-white students are, from childhood, excluded from opportunities and criminalized before they can even reach the halls of higher education. Marginalized communities, including Asian Americans, have been able to access resources and opportunities precisely because of policies like race-conscious admissions. Examining the wholeness of applicants, including lived and living experiences, is not discrimination – in fact, it is vital to creating a more equitable system for us all.
As an Asian American network, we believe the attempts to end Affirmative Action policies display a fundamental misunderstanding and neglect for the lived and living experiences of millions. We will not allow our community to be pitted against other communities of color. Building inclusive and diverse spaces strengthens our communities and equips students to understand one another and to confront the inequities and problems of our current and future generations.

연방대법원의 어퍼머티브 액션 심리에 대한 미주한인교육단체협의회(NAKASEC)의 입장
오늘 연방대법원은 ‘공정한 입시를 위한 학생 연합(SFFA-Students For Fair Admissions) 대 하바드 대학 및 SFFA 대 노스캐롤라이나대(UNC) 구두 심리를 진행하고 있습니다. 2023년에 나올 것으로 예상되는 이 판결은 어퍼머티브 액션과 인종을 고려한 입학 정책의 미래에 영향을 미칠 것입니다.
미주한인봉사교육단체협의회는(NAKASEC)은 다음과 같은 입장을 밝힙니다.
한인과 아시안아메리칸, 이민자들을 위해 활동하는 단체로서 우리는 인종을 고려한 입학이 우리 사회에 해를 끼친다는 잘못된 생각을 근본적으로 거부합니다. 또한 우리는 인종, 성별, 장애 및 이민 신분에 관계없이 모든 사람이 고등 교육을 포함한 모든 꿈을 추구할 수 있는 권리가 있다고 믿습니다.
미국이 인종적, 문화적, 경제적 위계질서, 특히 반흑인과 백인 우월주의 망상 위에 세워졌다는 것을 이해하는 것이 중요합니다. 이러한 신념과 아이디어는 고등 교육을 포함하여 미국의 구조, 시스템 및 제도에 내재되어 있습니다. 흑인과 라틴계 거주 지역의 기금 부족에 시달리는 공립학교에서부터 감옥에 이르기까지 이른바 ‘요람에서 감옥까지’로 불리는 통로가 존재합니다. 가난하고 백인이 아닌 학생들은 어린 시절부터 고등 교육에 이르기도 전에 기회가 박탈되고 범죄자 취급을 당합니다. 아시안 아메리칸을 포함한 소외된 커뮤니티는 인종을 고려한 입학 등 정책 덕분에 지원을 받고 기회에 접근할 수 있었습니다. 생활 경험을 포함해 지원자를 종합적으로 평가하는 것은 차별이 아닙니다. 사실, 우리 모두를 위해 보다 더 평등한 시스템을 만드는 것이 중요합니다.
아시안 아메리칸 네트워크인 우리는 어퍼머티브 액션을 끝내려는 시도가 수백만 명의 삶과 삶의 경험에 대한 근본적인 오해와 무시를 보여주는 것이라고 믿습니다. 우리는 우리 커뮤니티가 다른 유색인종 커뮤니티와 겨루는 것을 허용하지 않을 것입니다. 포용적이고 다양한 공간을 구축하면 커뮤니티가 강화되고 학생들이 서로를 이해하고 현재 및 미래 세대의 불평등과 문제에 대처할 수 있습니다.
