Senate’s Reintroduction of the Dream Act Would Help Millions
Washington D.C. – On February 9, Senators Durbin (D-IL) and Graham (R-SC) reintroduced the Dream Act – legislation that would offer permanent protections and a pathway to citizenship for approximately 1.9 million immigrants who arrived in the United States as children, “including the roughly 600,000 current DACA recipients.”
The National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC) is a nationwide network that serves Korean and Asian Americans and immigrants. For 29 years, NAKASEC has advocated tirelessly for immigrant justice that would recognize and uphold the dignity and humanity of all people without U.S. citizenship. Championing the battle cry “Citizenship4All,” NAKASEC is deeply aware of the urgent need for legal rights and protection for all 11 million people without citizenship.
Esther Jeon, NAKASEC Network Organizing Director, said: “While we welcome efforts to legislate a pathway to citizenship, we remain clear-eyed about the difficulty of passing such legislation in this Congress. Many members of Congress are anti-immigrant, funneling millions of dollars toward militarizing the border, expelling people seeking asylum, and incarcerating those who have not been granted immigration status. Any legislation that passes cannot be at the expense of increasing or expanding these already bloated programs and policies. We will continue to work with our communities, partners, and elected officials so that every person – including all 11 million immigrants without citizenship protection – is able to seek safety and a better life for themselves and their families.”
Hyunja Norma, Woori Juntos Executive Director, said: “We need to be clear that there are still many things that need to be done. We welcome efforts from legislation but it is not enough. We must push for actions, not words, to have direct pathways towards citizenship. We must continue to advocate for our communities, who cannot advocate for themselves. Our voice must be heard. We must continue to push legislative leaders to create policies that protect our safety and our people.”

상원, 천백만명이 혜택을 받을 수 있는 드림법안 재상정

워싱턴 D.C. – 2월 9일 더빈 상원의원 (민주 – 일리노이)과 그레이함 상원의원 (공화 – 사우스 캐롤라이나)이 드림법안을 재상정했습니다. 드림법안은 약 60만명에 달하는 현 다카 (아동기 입국자 유예조치) 수혜자를 포함하여 미성년자로 미국에 입국한 이민자 190만명을 지속적으로 보호하고 시민권 신청의 절차를 밟을 수 있도록 할 것입니다.
미주한인봉사교육단체협의회 (미교협)는 한인 및 동양계 미국인을 위해 봉사하는 전국조직으로서 지난 29년동안 미국 시민권이 없는 사람들의 존엄성와 인간성을 인정하고 옹호하기 위한 이민정의를 실현하기 위해 심혈을 기울여 왔습니다. “모든 사람에게 시민권을”을 저희의 표어로 외치면서 미교협은 미시민권자 천백만명 이민자의 법적 권리와 보호의 절박한 필요를 깊게 이해해 왔습니다.
미교협 조직국장 에스더 전은 “시민권 신청의 절차를 밟게하는 법안의 상정을 환영하지만 그런 법안이 상원에서 통과되는 것이 얼마나 힘든가를 우리는 명확히 알고 있다. 많은 의원들이 반이민적 정서를 갖고 있고, 수백만불의 예산을 쓰면서 국경단속을 군사화하고 있고, 망명신청자를 추방하고, 이민신분이 주어지지 않은 사람들을 감금하고 있다. 어떤 법안도 이렇게 부풀려진 행정명령과 증강된 정책의 댓가를 치르면서 통과될 수는 없다. 우리는 우리의 지역사회, 우리의 자매기관, 우리의 선출직 공직자들과 협력하여 미시민권 이민자 천백만명을 포함한 모든 사람이 안전과 자신과 가정을 위해 더 나은 삶을 추구할 수 있도록 할 것이다”라고 말했습니다.
우리훈토스 사무총장 신 현자 사무총장은 “앞으로 해야할 일이 많이 있음을 확실히 알고 있어야 한다. 법안의 재상정을 환영하지만 이로 만족할 수는 없다. 우리는 시민권으로 가는 길이 열리도록 말이 아니라 행동으로 강하게 밀어붙여야 한다. 스스로를 옹호할 수 없는 우리 지역사회들을 우리가 계속 옹호해야 하며 우리의 목소리가 전달되어야 한다. 우리의 안전을 보장하고 우리를 보호할 수 있는 정책입안을 하도록 의회지도자들을 계속 압박해야 한다”고 말했습니다.
