In the name of “homeland security,” several Congressional members are pushing the Clear Law Enforcement for Criminal Alien Removal (CLEAR) Act (H.R. 2671) and Homeland Security Enhancement Act (S. 1906) – a divisive agenda to deputize local police officers as immigration agents. Both bills force state and local police to enforce civil immigration laws, or lose certain federal funds. Both bills expand the scope of the National Crime Information Center database, which is routinely accessed by police to identify wanted criminals, to include individuals solely based upon their immigration status. In addition, the Senate bill severely restricts states’ autonomy in issuing driver’s licenses to immigrants and drastically limits the types of documents that the federal government can accept as identification in providing federal public benefits or services.
Between May 10-17, call Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) – a pivotal member of the Senate Judiciary committee – toll-free at 1 (800) 690-1936 with the following message:
“Hi, my name is [your name] and I’m from [your city] in California. As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the Homeland Security Enhancement Act (S. 1906) and any attempts to turn local police into immigration agents. Please help defeat these divisive initiatives, which endanger public safety and instill fear within immigrant communities.Thank you.”
