Building Asian American and Immigrant Power in the U.S.: Over 150 Community Members, Advocates, and Allies Gather in Houston, Texas

HOUSTON, TX – From April 13-16, over 150 community members, advocates, and allies convened in Houston to reflect, celebrate, strategize, and collaborate on the network’s work, struggles, dreams, and wins.

The National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC), a national network of five affiliates in six states, convened the gathering. Since 1994, NAKASEC has built Korean, Asian, and immigrant power throughout the United States. For years, NAKASEC and its affiliates have provided relief for the communities they serve by offering community services and organizing for policy changes. Such recent wins include the expansion of healthcare for low-income Illinois residents regardless of immigration status; the creation of driver’s privileges cards in Virginia and driver’s licenses in New York for residents regardless of immigration status; and the introduction of bills in the Texas legislature that would improve language access for Texas residents. Affiliates and NAKASEC work closely with other organizations and coalitions to build power to effect change.

With over 60% of Asian Americans being immigrants, and over 2 million Asian immigrants without citizenship, NAKASEC and its affiliates work to meet the critical needs of communities who are marginalized.

“It is amazing and powerful to convene our network for the first time since our founding,” shared NAKASEC co-director, Jung Woo Kim. “”Asian Americans are often seen as outsiders, but NAKASEC is working to change that. We believe that everyone belongs, and we are fighting for the rights of Asian Americans and immigrants to live safely, securely, and with dignity. We are facing many challenges. Some people are attacking our rights to be ourselves, to have quality housing, healthcare, food security, education, and clean water. Our communities are being harmed, while some politicians and corporate executives get richer. But we will not give up. We are rising up together, and we are winning battles for the rights of our communities. As a national network, we have the power to make a difference. Please join us in the fight for a better future for all.”

“We are proud of what Asian American community power has accomplished here in Virginia and across our affiliate network.” shared NAKASEC’s Virginia affiliate, Hamkae Center Director, Sookyung Oh. “Immigrant communities are gaining more access to the critical resources they need. Communication with linguistically-marginalized communities is being prioritized. And, Asian American voters are making the differences in local, state, and national elections. This was all made possible through sustained organizing, directly supporting our communities, and building collective power so that we can live together in safety and joy. As the visibility and empowerment of Asian Americans continues to grow nationwide, we must remember to stay united in protecting our democracy. There are many threats ahead of us but we can bravely face them knowing that our struggles and wins in Virginia are part of a powerful movement led together with our affiliates and NAKASEC.”

“NAKASEC and its affiliates are not just building power, but they are also building hope for Korean, Asian, and immigrant communities across the United States. Their tireless efforts in providing community services and advocating for policy changes have led to significant wins, improving the lives of thousands of people. By working closely with other organizations and coalitions, NAKASEC is demonstrating the transformative power of collective action in achieving social justice.” said Executive Director, Hyunja Norman, of NAKASEC’s Texas affiliate, Woori Juntos.
