NAKASEC Statement on Title 42

Today, the Biden-Harris administration announced that the administration will halt the use of Title 42 beginning on May 23. For the next 7 weeks, this cruel policy will continue unabated. The National Korean American Service and Education Consortium issued the following response:

Jung Woo Kim, Co-Director of NAKASEC, asserted, “Title 42 has been a vehicle to disproportionately punish and prevent Black, brown, poor, disabled, and queer people from seeking refuge and asylum. The announced ending of Title 42 is a welcome and much-needed step towards recognizing the humanity and dignity inherent to all people. While a solid step forward, the Biden administration must go further than reversing harmful policies; they must create better ones. Along with dismantling Title 42, the Biden administration must expand asylum and temporary protected status designations (TPS), end all expulsions for all asylum-seekers, and reject the criminalization of migrants by closing detention centers and ending e-carceration and surveillance programs. All people, regardless of race, origin, faith, sexuality, gender, and ability, want to live safely with their loved ones. We implore the Biden-Harris administration to uphold these values and create tangible changes that will increase the fairness and equity of our immigration system.”
