The Public Health Program Coordinator at NAKASEC VA will coordinate a multi-faceted work plan and support a team of part-time outreach specialists dedicated to increasing COVID-19 and influenza vaccine confidence and vaccination rates in Asian American communities in Virginia, while identifying for public health officials systemic barriers from existing efforts that currently prevent health equity for Asian Americans.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Outreach & Case Management (50%) 

  • Develop a calendar of COVID-19 and influenza vaccine educational outreach, including but not limited to hotspot/crowd outreach, door-to-door canvassing, tabling at public events, flyers at businesses frequented by Asian American communities, and establishing partnerships with Asian American community organizations/faith institutions. As you meet people who are vaccine-hesitant or anti-vaccine, engage in conversation with them to understand those motivations, which later can inform persuasion tactics
  • Develop multilingual materials (such as the doorhangers, flyers, social media posts, press releases, short videos, phone banking, etc.) to convey accurate information pertaining to COVID-19 and influenza vaccines based on CDC’s guidelines
  • Develop community spokespeople training
  • Recruit and be lead trainer for community spokespeople
  • Keep informed about the latest in COVID-19 and influenza testing and vaccine news and trends locally, regionally, and nationally to inform and adjust workplan as needed
  • Assist individuals for testing and vaccine appointments, finding transportation, and acting as mediator between providers and community members
  • Build relationships with local health departments and districts, particularly in municipalities and counties with significant Asian American communities
  • Identify bilingual Asian American healthcare providers who want to administer vaccines at the community level and connect them to local health departments/districts (may need to provide support to them to fulfill the CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Program Provider Agreement)
  • Support local Asian American organizations to boost their own capacity to increase vaccine outreach, including but not limited to trainings, connecting them to local health departments/districts for mobile vaccination clinics, etc
  • Work with Asian American media outlets to increase news coverage that promote accurate and persuasive information about COVID-19 and influenza vaccines
  • Represent NAKASEC VA at conferences, meetings, and community forums 

Staff Support (20%) 

  • Lead the hiring of three part-time outreach specialists
  • Train and provide ongoing support and remote management to outreach specialists(likely situated in different geographic regions)

Grant Administration (10%) 

  • Track monthly project progress and take remedial actions as necessary
  • Support in the preparation of grant reports

Miscellaneous (20%)   

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and team lead meetings
  • Participate in year-round organizing, civic engagement, and fundraising campaigns with rest of NAKASEC VA team
  • Carefully track time and communications to ensure appropriate assignment to c3 or c4, direct and grassroots lobbying, and electioneering
  • Being a thought partner to Director and other team leads on new programming/campaigns
  • Other duties as assigned

KEY SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Educational background or working experience in community or population health
  • Educational background or working experience in culturally-specific health practices
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Goal and deadlines oriented

  • Can take a big project and break it down into manageable chunks (ex. applying project management skills to organize an event)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proposes next steps and solutions, before asking others
  • Comfortable with training others on a range of issues

  • Verbal and written fluency in an Asian language
  • Can work occasional weekends and evenings
  • Valid drivers license and can access a car
  • Based in Virginia

Plus (but not required):

  • Educational or professional background in health education
  • Comfortable with designing outreach materials, such as flyers
  • Experience working with Asian American populations or Asian American community health outreach/outcomes
  • Understanding of and/or experience working with community health outreach/outcomes with vulnerable or hard-to-reach populations in Virginia specifically

Location: Virginia
Job Type: full-time
Reports to: Services & Outreach Team Lead
Salary & Benefits: $46K (commensurate with experience). Full health, dental, and vision insurance.  There is also paid time off, vacation, sick days (if you, a partner, a family member are sick), and other leave time customized to your unique circumstances. We close between December 25 and January 1 to recognize end-of-year stress and time for reflection and rejuvenation.
