NAKASEC and Korean American Association of Washington Invite Korean American Community to Show Support for Keeping Families Together

NAKASEC submits comments to Request for Information urging the Administration to prioritize family visas and announces community meeting on DACA/DAPA

Annandale, Virginia— Today, the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) and So Jung Lim, President of the Korean American Association of Washington, came together to announce two ways for community members to show support for Korean American families. NAKASEC and its affiliates will be submitting comments on the Request for Information in response to the Notice for Request for Information on Recommendations to Streamline and Improve the Legal Immigration System and is calling for stories related to family separation due to the family visa backlogs affecting 53,360 Koreans waiting in the visa backlogs. On January 31, NAKASEC will also hold an informational session on eligibility for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) programs.

Last November, President Obama took bold action to protect immigrants and their families through executive action. Information about the announcement on DAPA and the expansion of DACA will be shared at the Saturday informational session. All community members are encouraged to come to the NAKASEC office (7006 Evergreen Court, Suite 200, Annandale, VA 22003) for this event.

The President also created a Visa Modernization Task Force to identify ways to streamline and reform the nation’s legal immigration system and published a Notice for Request for Information (RFI) in the Federal Register seeking recommendations. NAKASEC and its affiliates, the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center (KRCC) and Korean Resource Center (KRC), will be submitting comments to the RFI on January 29, emphasizing the need to provide relief to families being separated by lengthy visa backlogs and ensure that significant weight is placed the family visa category. This is a joint Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) effort shared by national and local partners, including Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA), who will be submitting an RFI on behalf of the Chinese American community in San Francisco.
