NAKASEC Joint Statement: End of NSEERS

Our three organizations welcome the Obama administration’s decision to dismantle the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) program. The NSEERS was an ineffective anti-terrorism program that targeted non-citizen men from 25 countries based on religion, ethnicity and national origin, and created a chilling effect in Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian communities. For over a decade communities have called for an end to this discriminatory program that contributed to the unjust harassment, detention and deportation of community members.

This is an important action taken by the Obama administration at a time when all Americans are concerned about the incoming administration’s stated interest to implement a Muslim registry program. As we look towards 2017 and recognize the great political uncertainties ahead, we extend our support and solidarity to our Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian sisters and brothers.
