Summer Youth Empowerment Program

Program Background

Co-sponsorship of an annual Summer Youth Empowerment Program with affiliates in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Publication of bilingual educational materials such as Legislative Updates, Fact Sheets, Issue Paper and Reports on critical issues that impact the Korean American community.

Summer Youth Empowerment Program
For close to 10 years, NAKASEC has collaborated with its affiliates in coordinating an education & action training and exposure program for young Korean American. Each year, students participate in the 3 cities. While there are variations to content, all participants are essentially given opportunities to learn about issues such as the elections, student legalization, deportation, health access, and fish contamination through a combination of small groups study sessions and hands-on community outreach and education. Finally, all students are provided creative outlets with introduction classes to poongmool (Korean percussion ensemble) and creative social change art projects.

The program’s long term goal is to grow a new generation of community activists and to help individual participants develop a sense of belonging and identity as young ethnic minorities growing up in a multi-racial society. Each year, we innovate and seek to steadily increase the numbers of informed and activated young people.
