Korean American Community Denounce Racist Remarks in Local Race

(Los Angeles, CA) The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium and its affiliates, the Korean American Resource & Cultural Center (KRCC) in Chicago and the Korean Resource Center (KRC) in Los Angeles, are deeply disturbed and concerned by the recent racist remarks made towards Ronald Kim, a Korean American running for mayor of Saratoga, New York. The incident is far too common and suggests a pattern of racism targeting minority candidates.

In August 2009, Mr. Kim was called a “dog-eater” and repeatedly referred to as “Chairman Kim, Dictator Kim, Ron Kim II” by posters of the Saratogian Web site. While the Saratogian Web site has removed some of these statements, the bigger challenge is how to promote constructive dialogue.

“These remarks are completely unacceptable and have no relevance in any situation, whether it be in a classroom, at the local grocery store, or during a political campaign. As members of the Korean American and immigrant communities, we are very disappointed that this type of rhetoric continues to occur and hope that our communities can work together so that all individuals are given the equal opportunity to serve this country,” said Eun Sook Lee, executive director of NAKASEC.

“As an organization that has worked for over 15 years to promote social justice and respect for all, we are reminded that there is still much work to be done to eradicate racism and discrimination in our society. The hateful and racist statements made towards Mr. Kim will not be tolerated and we urge our communities to proactively work for tolerance,” said Becky Belcore, executive director of KRCC.

“America is a land strengthened by the contributions of immigrants, and as we teach our children to be socially responsible and work towards becoming full civic participants, incidents like this one reminds us to work even harder for a society where equality and respect are the defining principles,” said Dae Joong Yoon, executive director of KRC.

꿈을 이룰 수 있는 권리
코리안 아메리칸 청소년, 제 2회 드림 장학생 모집

(로스 앤젤레스) 미주한인봉사교육단체협의회(이하 미교협), 한인교육문화마당집, 민족학교는 제 2회 드림 장학생 모집을 공표하게 된 것을 자랑스럽게 생각한다. 지난 6년 동안 드림 법안의 통과를 위해 밤낮으로 캠페인을 펼쳐온 코리안 아메리칸 청소년들에 의해 창설된 이 기금은 어려움에 처해 재정보조를 필요로 하는 학생들에게 $1,000의 장학금을 제공하게 된다. 참고로 드림법안은 미국에서 자랐고, 자격 조건이 만족하는 학생들에게 신분 합법화의 기회를 제공하는 법안이다.

로스 앤젤레스의 청소년 그룹 라이스(Rise of Youth to Serve and Empower: RYSE)의 회원인 애슐리 박 양은 “청소년은 변화의 씨앗이다. 이는 로스 앤젤레스와 시카고의 청소년 모임인 라이스와 피쉬를 있게 하는 기본 원칙이기도 하다. 우리 청소년들의 꿈은 중요하며, 이것이 바로 드림 장학 기금이 시작된 이유이자 우리가 공부하여 꿈을 이루어 이 사회에 기여하고자 하는 우리의 친구들과 가족들을 지지하는 이유이다.”며 드림 장학 기금 참여 배경에 대해 설명했다.

모든 어린이가 의료혜택을 받는 건강한 미국
미주한인봉사교육단체협의회 김혜미 DC 디렉터, 서명 공식 행사에 참석

(워싱턴 디씨) 미주한인봉사교육단체협의회(이하 미교협)와 가입단체-시카고 한인교육문화마당집과 로스 앤젤레스 민족학교-는 2009 어린이 건강보험법의 재승인을 적극 환영한다. 2009년 2월 4일 수요일, 동부시간5시 05분 (서부시간 2시 5분), 마침내 오바마 대통령이 어린이 건강보험법(이하 SCHIP) 재승인 최종안에 공식 서명하게 된다. 또한, 이 서명식에는 그동안 SCHIP 재승인을 위해 활동해 온 미교협이 공식 초청을 받아, 김혜미 미교협 DC 디렉터가 참석하여 역사적인 순간을 지켜보게 된다.

대통령의 서명을 통해 법제화될 SCHIP은 이민자 어린이와 임산부의 5년 대기 조항을 삭제하여 더욱 큰 의의를 지닌다. 커뮤니티의 노력에 힘입어 통과된 SCHIP은 전국 4백만 명의 어린이에게 보험 혜택을 제공할 것으로 예상된다. 특히 18세 이하 코리안 아메리칸 4명 중 1명이 건강보험 없이 살아가고 있는 현실을 감안하면, 한인 커뮤니티에도 큰 도움이 될 전망이다.

노스 캘로라이나 주 나잇대일에 거주하는 4학년 머하메드 이브라힘 학생은 “미국의 미래는 건강한 어린이로부터 시작됩니다” 그림 대회에 작품이 당선되어, “의료보험을 살 형편이 되지 않아도 의료 보험은 꼭 필요하다. 왜냐하면 살아가는 데 꼭 필요한 것이기 때문이다.”고 말하며, 작품의 배경을 설명했다.

그동안 미교협과 가입단체-한인교육문화마당집, 민족학교-는 SCHIP의 통과 및 이민자 어린이와 임산부의 5년 대기 조항을 삭제하기 위해 다양한 교육활동과 “미국의 미래는 건강한 어린이로부터 시작됩니다” 캠페인을 진행해 왔으며, 8000여 개의 서명을 받아 의회에 전달했고, 의회 지도부 및 오바마 정권 인수위원회와 만나 SCHIP 재승인을 촉구했으며, 최근에는 어린이 그림 그리기 대회를 개최하여 오바마 대통령 취임식 주간에 워싱턴 디씨에서 그림 전시회를 열어, 많은 의원들과 사람들의 마음을 움직이는데 큰 역할을 해냈다. 캘리포니아, 노스 캐롤라이나, 텍사스 등 미 각지에서 모인 어린이 예술가들과 함께 한 전시회 기자회견에는 해리 리드 상원 원내대표와 제이 락펠러 상원의원이 참석 한 바 있다.

미교협은 1994년에 설립되어 반이민 물결에 맞서 다년간 조직과 옹호활동을 펼치고 있다. 1996년 웰페어법이 개정된 이래로 10년이 넘도록, 여전히 이민자의 복지 혜택 복원은 코리안 아메리칸을 비롯한 많은 커뮤니티의 우선과제로 남아 있다. 1999년의 “복원 96” 캠페인을 시작으로, 미교협과 가입단체는 1996년 제정된 법의 독소 조항들을 폐지하고자 하는 전국 및 지역 차원의 활동에 함께 해 오고 있다. 이러한 전국 차원의 권익 옹호 활동은 지난 수년간, 이민자 커뮤니티가 필요로 하는 서비스를 제공하는 지역 의료 관련 프로그램들을 지원해 왔다. 이를 통해 우리는 그동안 우리가 서비스를 제공해 왔던 가정들로부터 SCHIP 재승인과 확장에 대한 지지를 확고히 할 수 있었다. SCHIP 재승인과 확장이 승리임에는 의심의 여지가 없다. 이 승리가 더욱 빛나는 이유는 연장자들께서 버스 정류장에서 서명을 받아 주시고, 프리스쿨 선생님이 자신의 의원에게 SCHIP 재승인 촉구 전화를 걸고, 자녀 셋을 둔 어머니가 그림 대회를 위해 주말 내내 자원봉사 하는 등, 우리 모두가 참여해 얻어낸 값진 승리이기 때문이다.

Q: I will be using the scholarship for graduate/law/medical school. Can I apply?
A: Yes.

Q: What do you mean by “accredited college”?
A: When a college is “accredited,” it means that it has been reviewed and programs have been evaluated for quality. The accreditation is usually done by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education (USDE). All public universities, community colleges and most private universities are accredited. Do not worry about whether or not your college or university is accredited or not – most likely they are and if there are any concerns we will contact you.

Q: How do I prove that I am Asian American or Pacific Islander?
A: You only need to identify yourself as Asian American or Pacific Islander.

Q. When are you going to announce the scholarship recipients?
A: Decisions will be made the last week of May, and you will be notified between June 2nd and June 6th of 2008.

Q: Do I have to send in my FAFSA and my parent’s tax returns?
A: Yes, only if you have your FAFSA and/or your parent’s tax returns. If you do not have your FAFSA or parent’s tax returns, just fill out the “Household Financial Information” worksheet in the application (page 4).

Q: I don’t know which college I want to go to. Do I have to send in the tuition information for all the colleges I got into?
A: No. Just choose one and send the tuition information for that college.

Q: Do I have to provide a copy of my SAT score?
A: Submitting your SAT score is optional.

Q: If I become the scholarship recipient, when will I receive the scholarship money?
A: Please consult with each individual center.

Q: Will the recipients’ list be made public?
A: We want to have some form of public announcement (press conference, awards ceremony, etc.) with the goal of encouraging next year’s applicants to apply, and ask the community to help fund the scholarship. Since the Dream Scholarship is supported by the community, we do the publicity in order to be transparent and accountable to those who helped fund the scholarship. However, we will respect your privacy and remove your name (or use a pseudonym) if you request it.
