Founded by local community-based organizations in 1994, NAKASEC’s mission is to organize Korean and Asian Americans to achieve social, racial and economic justice. NAKASEC’s affiliates: Korean Resource Center in Los Angeles and Orange County, Hana Center in Chicago and NAKASEC Virginia in Annandale empower the most vulnerable community members including the low-income, recent immigrant, limited English proficient, undocumented, youth, women and seniors. Through education, social service, community organizing, public policy advocacy and civic participation, NAKASEC and affiliates ensure that these community members can impact progressive change at the local and national levels.

NAKASEC is one of the few national Asian American organizations that engages grassroots people in national organizing and advocacy programs and campaigns. NAKASEC and affiliates strongly believe that systemic change that benefits everyone results when folks who are most impacted by injustice act collectively through organizing, advocacy and civic engagement.

Position Summary:
The National Immigrant Rights Campaign Coordinator’s position is funded by NAKASEC and its affiliates. The Coordinator will focus on the empowerment of immigrant youth and young people who are directly impacted by the broken immigration system and will lead the campaign to increase community awareness as well as community engagement to advocate for citizenship for all hard working immigrants.

Major Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Campaigns: Strategic development, coordination and implementation of major campaigns of NAKASEC and affiliates including:

  • Immigrant Rights Project: leading NAKASEC & Affiliates centerpiece immigrant rights campaigns that fight for a pathway to citizenship and fair treatment for all immigrants.
  • Civic Engagement Campaigns: coordinating efforts of NAKASEC & affiliates to operate year-round civic engagement programs in key states that boost Asian American community participation in the electoral process and build community leadership and power.
  • AAPI Youth Organizing Network: developing NAKASEC & affiliate’s efforts to promote youth organizing and civic engagement.

Base Building

  • Provide various support to immigrant youth, including safe space, political education and leadership development.
  • AAPI Youth Organizing Network: developing NAKASEC & affiliate’s efforts to promote youth organizing and civic engagement.

Organizing Strategy

  • Develop and support local and national organizing strategies in line with NAKASEC strategic plan and goals
  • Coordinate regular evaluation practices with NAKASEC affiliates and bases
  • Support and develop concrete organizing, campaign, and basebuilding goals with NAKASEC affiliates and bases

Coalition work

  • Coordinate DACA and/or DREAM Act related collaboration.

Eligibility:

  • Strong vision of community empowerment and deep commitment to social change for marginalized communities.
  • Willingness to be a bold and creative thinker.
  • Strong understanding in organizing Asian Americans towards social, racial and economic justice issues.
  • Strong understanding in engaging immigrant Asian Americans in organizing and advocacy campaigns and activities.
  • Strong understanding of issues facing the Asian American community and other marginalized communities including people of color, women, and LGBTQ.
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills both with staff members and community members.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to build and work in coalitions.
  • Bilingual in the Korean and English languages a plus.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Supervision and Team:
The National Immigrant Rights Campaign Coordinator is supervised by and reports to the DJ Yoon, NAKASEC Co-ED or local affiliate manager/director. The Coordinator is a member of the National Immigrant Rights Campaign Team and will work closely with local affiliates of NAKASEC.

Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience. NAKASEC offers individual health care benefits.
