NAKASEC Announces Community Action Project for High School Students

DSCN5767ANNANDALE, VA — The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) launched the Community Action Program for high school students in Northern Virginia.  The Community Action Project focuses on issues that impact Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, development of leadership and organizing skills through direct community engagement, and active participation in civic engagement efforts.  Students will gain exposure to non-partisan electoral organizing efforts through voter registration drives, phone banking, and canvassing to encourage Asian American voters to head to the polls on election day.  From September 23rd to December 16th, students will meet on Mondays and Fridays from 4:30pm to 7pm and may earn 30-35 service hours upon good attendance and full participation.  Students may further be eligible for a President’s Volunteer Service Award through additional volunteering outside of the program.

For more information about the program and how to apply, please visit http://nakasec.org/vacap2016.  The application will close on September 11th at 11:59pm, and there is a $50 registration fee.  For questions or concerns, please contact SaeHee Chun at schun@nakasec.org or (703) 256-2208.

SaeHee Chun, Campaign Coordinator at NAKASEC, said: “NAKASEC is very excited to announce our fall youth program.  Through educational workshops, trainings, organizing experience, and direct exchange with community members, we hope to engage high school students in the AAPI community during this election season.”

Jessie Carbajal and Erica Kim, Virginia high school students and Community Outreach Volunteer at NAKASEC, said: “We are two youth Community Outreach Volunteers who have been volunteering since early July at NAKASEC.  Jessie has been doing work regarding the Drive Virginia Forward campaign, and Erica has been doing work regarding the Adoptee Citizenship Act.  We encourage people to be involved as it is a fun and productive opportunity to volunteer.  We believe that this work will allow other students to be more aware of the issues in our communities and what people around us face.”
