JOINT STATEMENT BY NAKASEC AND AFFILIATES ON
THE “DEMAND A VOTE” DISCHARGE PETITION
WASHINGTON DC – On Wednesday, March 26, the House Democrats came together to announce the release of the “Demand a Vote” discharge petition to give immigration reform a vote after months of inaction. Below is a statement by Dae Joong (DJ) Yoon, executive director of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium, Sik Son, executive director of the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center in Chicago, and Hee Joo Yoon, executive director of the Korean Resource Center in Los Angeles.
“We need movement in the House to fix the broken immigration system that is keeping 11 million undocumented immigrants in the shadows and tearing apart American families through inhumane deportations and lengthy immigration backlogs. This is unacceptable. In the past month, during the Fast for Families Across America Tour, we have heard endless stories of pain and suffering faced by families torn apart by deportations. Over 1.5 million undocumented Asian Americans are feeling this devastation and each day they are speaking out with us. Families before politics; Congress needs to end the delays, stop making excuses, and heed the words of its constituents. Passing the discharge petition will be an important step towards finding a solution to America’s immigration problem.”
